Wave of attacks against local chief executives

Since 2016 the number of local officials being killed has constantly been rising. As of today, the number of killed mayors and vice mayors has reached 25. This is why detained Senator Leila de Lima has filed a Senate Resolution that seeks to further investigate the killings of local leaders. The most recent case being the extrajudicial killing of Calbayog City Mayor Ronaldo Aquino who was shot by policemen under disputed circumstances on March 8, 2021.

De Lima stated the series of attacks against local chief executives are “part of a pattern of and systematic violations of human rights in the country, including by state agents” She also said it is about time to thoroughly investigate these cases to oppose the culture of impunity.
