The Aktionsb\u00fcndnis Menschenrechte<\/span> \u2013<\/span> Philippinen<\/span> (AMP) is deeply concerned about the enforced disappearance and death of Elena<\/span> Tijamo,<\/span> a<\/span> dedicated<\/span> human rights<\/span> defender<\/span> and<\/span> community coordinator<\/span>.<\/span> Before<\/span> she resurfaced in a<\/span> hospital in Manila on<\/span> August 30, 2021<\/span>, Elena had been a victim of enforced disappearance for over 13<\/span> months. O<\/span>n<\/span> June 13, 2020<\/span>,<\/span> four unidentified armed men<\/span> and<\/span> two women<\/span> had kidnapped her<\/span> from her<\/span> home in Sitio Avocado, Barangay Kampingganon, Bantayan Island, Cebu (Visayas)<\/span>.<\/span> Since then<\/span>, her<\/span> whereabouts<\/span> were<\/span> unknown.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

On<\/span> August<\/span> 30,<\/span> 2021, one of her family members based in Manila<\/span> –<\/span> far away <\/span>from where<\/span> she<\/span> was originally abducted<\/span> –<\/span> r<\/span>eceived a cal<\/span>l from an unknown person saying that Elena had<\/span> received surgery<\/span> and<\/span> had<\/span> died in<\/span> a<\/span> hospital.<\/span> It took her family two more days to get access to<\/span> her body, <\/span>which<\/span> had already been brought to a funeral<\/span> home<\/span> under a false name.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In a statement, the AMP strongly condemns the<\/span> enforced disappearance<\/span> and the<\/span> death of Elena Tijamo<\/span> and<\/span> calls upon the\u00a0 Government<\/span> of the Philippines<\/span> to<\/span><\/span> immediately<\/span> and impartially<\/span> i<\/span>nvestigate her <\/span>enforced disappearance<\/span> and death<\/span> and prosecute the perpetrators and all parties involved<\/span> in the crime, among others.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
