November 25, 2019 marked the “International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women”. On this occasion, the German NGO network “Internationale Advocacy Netzwerke” (IAN) – of which the AMP is a member organization – highlighted in its 2019 report (in German) the different levels of violence against women in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.<\/p>\n
Since the outbreak of the Corona pandemic in 2020, violence against women and girls has been on the rise. UN Women therefore speaks of a shadow pandemic. Firmly anchored patriarchal legal and socio-cultural structures, which already promoted violence against women and girls before, have been reinforced by the pandemic. Impeded access to basic social and medical services and justice, a greater threat of poverty and general insecurity in the context of the pandemic act as catalysts.<\/p>\n
Violence against women and girls is a global problem. Gender discrimination often intersects with other forms of discrimination, especially in relation to ethnicity, class, caste, and sexuality.<\/p>\n
