The report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/philippines\/amnesty-international-urge-marcos-explicit-order-stop-bloody-drug-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">underlined<\/a> that drug-related killings or extrajudicial killings in the context of the so-called \u201cwar on drugs,\u201d especially by the police and other security forces, continue to be a \u201cserious problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since Ferdinand Marcos Jr. took office in mid-2022, the Dahas Project of the University of the Philippines <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DahasPH\/status\/1788845397806592485\/photo\/2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">documented<\/a> over 600 drug-related killings by May 2024. During the report presentation, Amnesty International <a href=\"https:\/\/www.philstar.com\/headlines\/2024\/04\/24\/2350154\/amnesty-urges-marcos-end-drug-war-killings-persist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">appealed<\/a> to the Marcos Jr. government to adopt a \u201cclear and unequivocal policy\u201d to put an end to the \u201cwar on drugs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Butch Olano, Director of Amnesty International Philippines, also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/philippines\/amnesty-international-urge-marcos-explicit-order-stop-bloody-drug-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">emphasized<\/a> the need for the Philippine government to cooperate with the ICC investigators. On April 15, 2024, President Marcos Jr. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/philippines\/amnesty-international-urge-marcos-explicit-order-stop-bloody-drug-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reiterated<\/a> that the government would not extradite ex-President Duterte to the ICC and would not recognize an arrest warrant.<\/p>\n<p>Amnesty International&#8217;s key demands <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmanetwork.com\/news\/topstories\/nation\/904620\/amnesty-international-joins-call-to-abolish-ntf-elcac\/story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">include<\/a> the abolition of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) as well as of the Anti-Terrorism Act, the adoption of a law to protect human rights defenders and the provision of adequate support for families of victims of drug-related killings.<\/p>\n<p>In response to Amnesty International&#8217;s demands, the Philippine Department of Justice (DOJ) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/philippines\/amnesty-international-urge-marcos-explicit-order-stop-bloody-drug-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stated<\/a> that the government is determined to stop drug-related killings and strengthen the justice system by taking \u201call necessary steps\u201d to hold those responsible for human rights violations accountable.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Photo \u00a9 Raffy Lerma<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A few days after the US State Department published its report, Amnesty International presented its annual report \u201cThe State of the World&#8217;s Human Rights\u201d on April 23, 2024.
