The protection order <a href=\"https:\/\/www.benarnews.org\/english\/news\/philippine\/top-lawyer-asks-to-remove-protection-order-from-activists-02212024120324.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was<\/a> issued by the Supreme Court at the beginning of February because the activists felt threatened. The OSG <a href=\"https:\/\/www.benarnews.org\/english\/news\/philippine\/top-lawyer-asks-to-remove-protection-order-from-activists-02212024120324.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">argued<\/a> that the protection order hindered the police from serving an ongoing arrest warrant for the activists for alleged defamation.<\/p>\n<p>In October 2023, the Philippine Department of National Defence <a href=\"https:\/\/amp.ngo\/en\/previously-abducted-environmental-activists-charged-with-perjury\/\">charged<\/a> the two activists for alleged perjury. According to their statements, Castro and Tamano were <a href=\"https:\/\/amp.ngo\/en\/worrying-cases-of-enforced-disappearances-of-activists\/\">abducted<\/a> by the Philippine military in September 2023 and forced to make a false statement. More than two weeks after their disappearance, the military presented them to the public in a press conference. The military <a href=\"https:\/\/amp.ngo\/en\/worrying-cases-of-enforced-disappearances-of-activists\/\">claimed<\/a> that the two had sought protection and admitted their membership of the rebel group New People&#8217;s Army. However, the activists explained that the military had abducted them and forced them to make a false confession. In the meantime, the perjury charges were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.philstar.com\/headlines\/2024\/01\/29\/2329426\/doj-recommends-filing-grave-oral-defamation-vs-abducted-activists-tamano-castro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dismissed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Justice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.philstar.com\/headlines\/2024\/02\/20\/2334850\/arrest-warrant-castro-tamano-served\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">issued<\/a> at the request of the military defamation charges against the activists in December 2023. Despite the Supreme Court&#8217;s protection order, Castro and Tamano reported that they were still subject to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.philstar.com\/nation\/2024\/02\/23\/2335570\/activists-hit-continuous-surveillance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">surveillance<\/a> by state authorities.
