Baerbock <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/philippines\/interview-german-foreign-minister-annalena-baerbock-philippine-ties\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">met <\/a>with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Foreign Minister Enrique Manalo. Among others, she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/philippines\/german-minister-baerbock-manila-visit-statement-south-china-sea-january-11-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expressed <\/a>her concern about Chinese activities in South China Sea that seem to jeopardize the sovereignty of the Philippines and affect freedom of navigation. Talks were also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/philippines\/german-minister-baerbock-manila-visit-statement-south-china-sea-january-11-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">held<\/a> on the relaunched free trade agreement negotiations between the European Union and the Philippines.<\/p>\n<p>Baerbock <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/philippines\/german-minister-baerbock-manila-visit-statement-south-china-sea-january-11-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">praised<\/a> the Philippine government&#8217;s decisions to pursue a new approach to dealing with drugs and to place a focus on human rights and freedom of the press. President Marcos Jr. also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.philstar.com\/headlines\/2024\/01\/12\/2325186\/marcos-jr-set-visit-germany-march\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> his visit to Germany on March 12, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Baerbock also held <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/philippines\/interview-german-foreign-minister-annalena-baerbock-philippine-ties\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">talks<\/a> in Manila with Maria Ressa, the founder and CEO of Rappler, as well as with former senator Leila de Lima, who was recently <a href=\"https:\/\/amp.ngo\/en\/former-senator-leila-de-lima-is-free-on-bail\/\">released<\/a> on bail after more than six years in prison.
