Germany&#8217;s new ambassador to the Philippines, Michael Pfaffernoschke, again <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnnphilippines.com\/news\/2023\/8\/24\/michael-pfaffernoshke-icc-drug-war-probe.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">urged<\/a> the Marcos administration in an interview with CNN on August 24, 2023, to cooperate with the ICC.<\/p>\n<p>Human rights groups such as Rise Up for Life and for Rights <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/nation\/international-criminal-court-junks-philippine-government-appeal-drug-war-families-closer-justice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">welcomed<\/a> the ICC&#8217;s decision. In Defense of Human Rights and Dignity Movement (iDEFEND) also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/nation\/international-criminal-court-junks-philippine-government-appeal-drug-war-families-closer-justice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stressed<\/a> that this decision points out that &#8220;justice cannot wait&#8221; and that the Court is taking into account the ongoing situation of grieving families. Philippine Alliance of Human Rights Advocates (PAHRA) was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/nation\/international-criminal-court-junks-philippine-government-appeal-drug-war-families-closer-justice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pleased<\/a> that the decision sends a strong message to governments that international law cannot be met with impunity.<\/p>\n<p>Human rights groups such as Philippine Human Rights Information Center (PhilRights) are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/nation\/positive-international-criminal-court-developments-push-more-drug-war-victims-come-forward\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">certain<\/a> that despite a long pending trial at the ICC, the developments will encourage more families of relatives of victims in the &#8220;war on drugs&#8221; to share their stories.<\/p>\n<p>The Philippine government and the Department of Justice, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.philstar.com\/headlines\/2023\/07\/18\/2281846\/doj-chief-reiterates-icc-not-welcome-here\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> to prevent the ICC from investigating in the Philippines, saying they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.philstar.com\/headlines\/2023\/07\/18\/2282042\/marcos-admin-disappointed-iccs-decision-stresses-minority-position\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lack<\/a> the authority to do so.
