{"id":8536,"date":"2023-06-26T01:00:16","date_gmt":"2023-06-26T00:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/amp.ngo\/?p=8536"},"modified":"2023-06-23T13:41:48","modified_gmt":"2023-06-23T12:41:48","slug":"third-journalist-killed-under-president-marcos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/amp.ngo\/en\/third-journalist-killed-under-president-marcos\/","title":{"rendered":"Third journalist killed under President Marcos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Radio journalist Crescenciano Bunduquin was found <a href=\"https:\/\/ipi.media\/philippines-radio-broadcaster-killed-as-violence-against-journalists-continues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shot<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/nation\/broadcaster-cresenciano-bunduquin-killed-may-31-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two<\/a> unidentified persons on motorcycles in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro on May 31, 2023. Bunduquin succumbed to his bullet wounds and died on the way to the hospital. He is the <a href=\"https:\/\/amp.ngo\/en\/murder-of-journalist-percy-lapid-exposes-government-involvement\/\">third<\/a> murdered journalist under the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. His killing follows seven months after the killing of radio journalist, Percival &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/nation\/timeline-killing-percy-lapid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Percy Lapid<\/a>&#8221; Mabasa in Las Pi\u00f1as City in October 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Bunduquin was a known &#8220;hard-hitting&#8221; commentator who <a href=\"https:\/\/rsf.org\/en\/philippine-radio-show-host-gunned-down-after-receiving-threats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">denounced<\/a> cases of political corruption, <a href=\"https:\/\/newsinfo.inquirer.net\/1781790\/protection-offered-to-family-of-gunman-in-radiomans-slay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">illegal<\/a> gambling, and was very vocal about the <span lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">circumstances surrounding an oil spill in Mindoro in February 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Suspected perpetrators in Bunduquin&#8217;s murder, according to the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS), were police Major Isabelo Bautista and his partner, with whom the latter was involved in local &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.philstar.com\/nation\/2023\/06\/08\/2272290\/cop-tagged-radiomans-killing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">peryahan<\/a> games&#8221; (a type of roulette) in Oriental Mindoro. A police <a href=\"https:\/\/www.philstar.com\/headlines\/2023\/06\/01\/2270701\/task-group-formed-investigate-killing-oriental-mindoro-broadcaster?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=substack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Special Investigation Task Group<\/a> (SITG) has been assembled to further investigate Bunduquin&#8217;s murder.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) and the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) <a href=\"https:\/\/newsinfo.inquirer.net\/1778252\/fwd-chr-decries-shooting-of-radio-broadcaster-conducts-independent-investigation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">condemned<\/a> Bunduquin&#8217;s murder and reported that its regional office was conducting an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.philstar.com\/headlines\/2023\/06\/01\/2270722\/chr-nujp-urge-govt-act-media-killings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">independent investigation<\/a> on the case. The CHR also drew attention to the repeated so-called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/globalvoices.org\/2023\/04\/27\/what-is-red-tagging-and-why-it-is-dangerous-in-the-philippines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">red-tagging<\/a>&#8221; attacks against activists (i.e., falsely accusing them of supporting the communist insurgency). In doing so, the CHR named the controversial Sonshine Media Network International (SMNI) television channel, whose hosts have <a href=\"https:\/\/newsinfo.inquirer.net\/1768442\/smni-hosts-red-tagging-spree-vs-reporters-anew-gravely-alarms-chr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">targeted<\/a> some NUJP reporters.<\/p>\n<p>Bunduquin is the 198th murdered Filipino journalist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/nation\/broadcaster-cresenciano-bunduquin-killed-may-31-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">since 1986<\/a>, 101 of whom were radio journalists. The Philippines ranks <a href=\"https:\/\/news.tv5.com.ph\/national\/read\/press-freedom-philippines-climbs-15-places-in-press-freedom-index-but-concerns-on-attacks-remain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">132nd<\/a> out of 180 countries in the 2023 World Press Freedom Index.<\/p>\n<p>On May 18, 2023, managing director of the online news agency Rappler Maria Ressa and the company were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/nation\/philippine-tax-court-clears-nobel-laureate-maria-ressa-rappler-of-4-cases\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acquitted<\/a> in charges of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/nation\/court-tax-appeals-affirms-maria-ressa-tax-evasion-acquittal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tax evasion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Photo \u00a9 Raffy Lerma<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Radio journalist Crescenciano Bunduquin was found shot by two unidentified persons on motorcycles in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro on May 31, 2023.
