One of several nationwide demonstrations took place outside of the Philippine Commission on Elections (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/nation\/elections\/photos-protests-polls-process-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COMELEC<\/a>) in Manila on May 10, 2022, the day after the election.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.philstar.com\/nation\/2022\/05\/16\/2181368\/officials-hit-red-tagging-students?utm_campaign=News%20and%20updates%20on%20human%20rights%20in%20the%20Philippines&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=Revue%20newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wave of \u201cred-tagging\u201d<\/a> &#8211; meaning the false accusation to be a supporter of the communist insurgency &#8211; followed. The \u201cNational Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict\u201d (NTF-ELCAC) labeled students as disruptors and destabilizers. National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon also\u00a0 claimed that the state-run University of the Philippines (UP) provides an ideal breeding ground for the recruitment for the communist New People&#8217;s Army (NPA). On May 13, 2022, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.philstar.com\/nation\/2022\/05\/16\/2181368\/officials-hit-red-tagging-students?utm_campaign=News%20and%20updates%20on%20human%20rights%20in%20the%20Philippines&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=Revue%20newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UP President\u2019s Advisory Council released a statement<\/a> wherein they rejected the allegations as \u2018baseless and paranoid\u2019 while stressing the need for critical and free thinking in its educational institutions. \u2018We will not stand down when our students\u2019 lives are at risk. We will continue to defend our academic spaces,\u2019 the UP said in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.philstar.com\/nation\/2022\/05\/16\/2181368\/officials-hit-red-tagging-students?utm_campaign=News%20and%20updates%20on%20human%20rights%20in%20the%20Philippines&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=Revue%20newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. Already a day earlier, UP Visayas released a statement on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/nation\/elections\/universities-groups-denounce-red-tagging-results-protesters\/?utm_campaign=News%20and%20updates%20on%20human%20rights%20in%20the%20Philippines&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=Revue%20newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201dred-tagging\u201d in social media<\/a>, stating that these recent comments \u2018compromise [our students] security and instill fear\u2019. Various student councils also set up help desks for affected individuals.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.philstar.com\/headlines\/2022\/05\/12\/2180648\/kids-books-about-dictatorship-martial-law-spook-philippine-intel-chief?utm_campaign=News%20and%20updates%20on%20human%20rights%20in%20the%20Philippines&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=Revue%20newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Adarna House<\/a>, a publisher of Filipino children&#8217;s books, was also affected by red-tagging. Shortly after the election, it offered a collection of illustrated children&#8217;s books on dictatorships and martial law during the Marcos dictatorship for pre-sale. Director-General <a href=\"https:\/\/www.philstar.com\/headlines\/2022\/05\/12\/2180648\/kids-books-about-dictatorship-martial-law-spook-philippine-intel-chief?utm_campaign=News%20and%20updates%20on%20human%20rights%20in%20the%20Philippines&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=Revue%20newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alex Monteagudo<\/a> from the \u201cNational Intelligence Coordinating Agency\u201d asserted in a Facebook post: \u2018This is how the CPP\/NPA\/NDP radicalize not just our youth, but our children.\u2019 In a statement, the human rights group Karapatan defended the Adarna House.
