In a statement, the human rights group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) suspects <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bulatlat.com\/2022\/03\/16\/groups-hit-red-tagging-against-political-opposition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">that red-tagging also serves as a strategy<\/a> to curb Robredo&#8217;s increasing popularity. For this reason, Rowena Guanzon, former member of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), advocates for the punishment of red-tagging as a form of intimidation as an election offense.<\/p>\n<p>The controversial National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) is particularly known for branding individuals and groups as terrorists or communists. Lately <a href=\"https:\/\/newsinfo.inquirer.net\/1573277\/badoy-says-red-tagging-not-dangerous-but-427-slain-activists-show-otherwise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NTF-ELCAC spokesperson, Lorraine Badoy<\/a>, has repeatedly claimed that Robredo and the Makabayan Bloc are collaborating with the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP). Three official complaints against Badoy and the NTF-ELCAC for red-tagging followed. The Makabayan Bloc filed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bulatlat.com\/2022\/03\/26\/red-tagger-lorraine-badoy-sued-for-violation-of-election-code\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">complaint before the Commission on Elections (COMELEC)<\/a>. A group of 26 activists as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.philstar.com\/headlines\/2022\/04\/07\/2172938\/lorraine-badoy-sued-again-ombudsman-tagging-health-workers-cpp-npa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alliance of Health Workers<\/a> filed complaints before the Office of the Ombudsman; the latter demands Badoy&#8217;s suspension from office.<\/p>\n<p>The human rights organization Karapatan calls on META, the parent company of Facebook, to <a href=\"https:\/\/mb.com.ph\/2022\/04\/08\/human-rights-group-calls-on-meta-to-take-down-ntf-elcac-facebook-pages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">block the accounts<\/a> of NTF-ELCAC and Badoy in order to protect politicians, supporters and activists from the often severe consequences of red-tagging but also to prevent the spread of disinformation during the election campaign.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the light of the upcoming May 9 elections, cases of red-tagging against the opposition &#8211; especially presidential candidate Leni Robredo and her supporters &#8211; are on the rise.
