During the status conference, case-related issues are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/philippines\/rodrigo-duterte-international-criminal-court-trial-start-november-30-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">discussed<\/a> before the trial officially starts.<\/p>\n<p>Presiding judge Joanna Korner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/philippines\/rodrigo-duterte-international-criminal-court-trial-start-november-30-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> that once the trial begins in November, the court will be in session daily. Duterte must <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/philippines\/rodrigo-duterte-international-criminal-court-trial-start-november-30-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">appear<\/a> in person at every hearing.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Haynes and Kate Gibson <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnation.inquirer.net\/324794\/duterte-crimes-against-humanity-case-iccs-first-status-conference\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">took over<\/a> as Duterte\u2019s new lawyers, replacing Nicholas Kaufman and Dov Jacobs at the May 27, 2026, ICC hearing.<\/p>\n<p>Haynes <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnation.inquirer.net\/324794\/duterte-crimes-against-humanity-case-iccs-first-status-conference\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">requested<\/a> a new fitness review for Duterte, arguing that the upcoming trial will be more demanding than pre-trial proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>Korner initially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/philippines\/rodrigo-duterte-international-criminal-court-trial-start-november-30-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suggested<\/a> postponing the trial schedule until a medical examiner confirmed Duterte&#8217;s fitness for trial, but the trial chamber eventually announced its final ruling on the trial dates.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Korner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/philippines\/rodrigo-duterte-international-criminal-court-trial-start-november-30-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pointed out<\/a> that the prosecutors had submitted an overwhelming amount of evidence \u2013 up to 70 witnesses and 197 speeches of the former President. In response, trial lawyer Julian Nicholls <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/philippines\/rodrigo-duterte-international-criminal-court-trial-start-november-30-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agreed<\/a> to narrow down the materials for the court.<\/p>\n<p>Lawyers representing victims of Duterte\u2019s so called \u201cwar on drugs\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnation.inquirer.net\/325155\/duterte-trial-lawyers-see-more-victims-coming-out\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">believe<\/a> that thousands more individuals may join the trial, adding to the 539 already recognized during the pre-trial phase. Legal representative Gilbert Andres said these new participants will continue to be <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnation.inquirer.net\/325155\/duterte-trial-lawyers-see-more-victims-coming-out\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acknowledged<\/a> as the trial unfolds.<\/p>\n<p>The next status conferences are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/philippines\/rodrigo-duterte-international-criminal-court-trial-start-november-30-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scheduled<\/a> for June 23 and July 14, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Duterte has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icc-cpi.int\/cases?cases_fulltext=Duterte&amp;f%5B0%5D=situation_name_colloquial_cases%3A889\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">detained<\/a> at The Hague since his arrest in Manila in March 2025. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icc-cpi.int\/news\/icc-pre-trial-chamber-i-confirms-all-charges-against-rodrigo-roa-duterte-and-commits-him-trial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">faces<\/a> three counts of crimes against humanity of murder and attempted murder linked to his administration\u2019s bloody \u201cwar on drugs\u201d and alleged involvement with the \u201cDavao Death Squad,\u201d a vigilante group of hitmen.<\/p>\n<p>According to human rights groups, tens of thousands of Filipinos were <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnation.inquirer.net\/324892\/icc-orders-new-medical-exams-for-duterte-delays-trial-date\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">killed<\/a> in the campaign, including children as young as three. Government records reported at least 6,000 deaths until the end of Duterte\u2019s administration in 2022.
