{"id":12376,"date":"2025-12-11T06:55:09","date_gmt":"2025-12-11T05:55:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/amp.ngo\/?p=12376"},"modified":"2025-12-09T13:01:04","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T12:01:04","slug":"families-and-journalists-still-call-for-justice-at-16th-maguindanao-massacre-commemoration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/amp.ngo\/en\/families-and-journalists-still-call-for-justice-at-16th-maguindanao-massacre-commemoration\/","title":{"rendered":"Families and journalists still call for justice at 16th Maguindanao Massacre commemoration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sixteen years after the Maguindanao massacre, families of the victims, media groups and human rights advocates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/philippines\/mindanao\/maguindanao-massacre-anniversary-unfinished-struggle-november-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">marked<\/a> the tragedy\u2019s anniversary with renewed demands for justice, stronger safeguards for press freedom, and full recognition of every person who was killed.<\/p>\n<p>The massacre was <a href=\"https:\/\/pcij.org\/2019\/12\/18\/the-ampatuan-massacre-summary-of-case-trial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">carried<\/a> out by members of the powerful Ampatuan clan in Maguindanao province on the island of Mindanao on November 23, 2009, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/philippines\/mindanao\/maguindanao-massacre-anniversary-unfinished-struggle-november-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a> 58 lives, including 32 journalists. Only 57 victims were officially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/philippines\/mindanao\/maguindanao-massacre-anniversary-unfinished-struggle-november-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recognized<\/a> in the 2019 court verdict.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/businessmirror.com.ph\/2025\/11\/25\/centerlaw-seeks-recognition-of-photojournalist-momay-as-58th-maguindanao-massacre-victim\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bid<\/a> to formally acknowledge photojournalist Reynaldo \u201cBebot\u201d Momay as one of those killed remains unresolved since his body has not been recovered.<\/p>\n<p>The massacre was <a href=\"https:\/\/newsinfo.inquirer.net\/1696507\/maguindanao-massacre-the-wound-of-ph-impunity-that-will-never-heal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rooted<\/a> in a political rivalry between the Ampatuan clan and Esmael Mangudadatu, with victims ambushed while covering Mangudadatu\u2019s candidacy. Victims\u2019 families and journalists <a href=\"https:\/\/newsinfo.inquirer.net\/1696507\/maguindanao-massacre-the-wound-of-ph-impunity-that-will-never-heal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">continue<\/a> to fear for their safety, as most accused remain free.<\/p>\n<p>While key Ampatuan family members and several accomplices were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/philippines\/mindanao\/maguindanao-massacre-anniversary-unfinished-struggle-november-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">convicted<\/a>, more than 80 suspects <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/philippines\/mindanao\/maguindanao-massacre-anniversary-unfinished-struggle-november-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">remain<\/a> at large.<\/p>\n<p>Journalists and media organizations in the Philippines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/philippines\/mindanao\/maguindanao-massacre-anniversary-unfinished-struggle-november-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">commemorated<\/a> the massacre anniversary with calls to defend press freedom, confront threats to democratic rights, and ensure such atrocities are neither forgotten nor repeated.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Cagayan de Oro Press Club (COPC) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/philippines\/mindanao\/maguindanao-massacre-anniversary-unfinished-struggle-november-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">emphasized<\/a> that the massacre was an attack not only on 58 journalists but also on the public\u2019s right to know. COPC president Froilan Gallardo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/philippines\/mindanao\/maguindanao-massacre-anniversary-unfinished-struggle-november-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">urged<\/a> concrete actions to protect journalists, strengthen legal safeguards, promote accountability, and teach future generations to value truth over convenience.<\/p>\n<p>The Philippines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bulatlat.com\/2025\/11\/01\/journalists-disagree-ptfoms-remarks-minimizing-media-killings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ranked<\/a> ninth on the Committee to Protect Journalists\u2019 2024 Global Impunity Index, which highlights countries that fail to hold killers of journalists accountable. With 18 unresolved media killings, the country has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bulatlat.com\/2025\/11\/01\/journalists-disagree-ptfoms-remarks-minimizing-media-killings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">remained<\/a> on the list for 17 consecutive years.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Philippine alternative news outlet Bulatlat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/newsbreak\/in-depth\/bulatlat-court-victory-rodrigo-duterte-blocking-order-press-freedom-win\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">secured<\/a> a legal victory after the Quezon City Regional Trial Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bulatlat.com\/2025\/11\/25\/bulatlat-wins-censorship-case-court-voids-memo-blocking-27-websites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nullified<\/a> the 2022 memorandum of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) that ordered the blocking of 27 websites.<\/p>\n<p>The NTC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bulatlat.com\/2025\/11\/25\/bulatlat-wins-censorship-case-court-voids-memo-blocking-27-websites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">released<\/a> the instruction directing the blockage of 27 websites following a letter from NTC and former national security advisor Hermogenes Esperon Jr. claiming, without evidence, that the sites promoted terrorism or were connected to terrorist groups. The court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bulatlat.com\/2025\/11\/25\/bulatlat-wins-censorship-case-court-voids-memo-blocking-27-websites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noted<\/a> that the NTC should have followed due process by providing notice and holding a hearing.
