The court decision <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/philippines\/groups-statements-court-appeals-decision-voids-shutdown-order\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">restored<\/a> the company&#8217;s certificate of incorporation and eliminated the risk of a shutdown. Maria Ressa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/philippines\/maria-ressa-message-marcos-jr-government-please-stop-appealing-after-win-sec-shutdown-order\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called<\/a> on the government of Marcos Jr. to refrain from further appeals and to respect the independence of the media.<\/p>\n<p>The order was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/newsbreak\/in-depth\/why-rappler-won-case-duterte-time-sec-shutdown-order\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">based<\/a> on an accusation that Rappler had violated regulations on foreign ownership of media. The accusation dated back to the term of office of former President Duterte, whose so-called \u201cwar on drugs\u201d was sharply criticized by Rappler. That&#8217;s why the shutdown order was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/newsbreak\/in-depth\/why-rappler-won-case-duterte-time-sec-shutdown-order\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">considered<\/a> politically motivated.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the recent victory, Rappler still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/philippines\/229514-maria-ressa-pleads-not-guilty-anti-dummy-charge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">faces<\/a> one charge for alleged <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/newsbreak\/in-depth\/why-rappler-won-case-duterte-time-sec-shutdown-order\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online<\/a> defamation or cyber libel and one charge for alleged violations of the \u201cAnti-Dummy Law\u201d (i.e., criminalizing foreign nationals who attempt to circumvent constitutional restrictions).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Photo \u00a9 Raffy Lerma<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On August 9, 2023, the Court of Appeals in Manila lifted the shutdown order against the news portal Rappler.
